Things You Don’t See in Florida – The End

leave a comment »

I’ve decided it’s time for us to move on from our “Things You Don’t See” project, mostly because it’s freezing out now. Any other ideas I had left require me to bundle up and brave the snow….and that’s no fun 🙂

So, my last image for this project was taken while ice fishing over the weekend in Alpena. I was really afraid to go out on the water at first, until I realized how thick the ice was when we drilled the first hole…I couldn’t believe it! This picture was my favorite from the trip–if you look close you can even see me all bundled up!

We only got one bass while we were out there, but after we left the other boys caught a few more. So there you have it, you don’t have freezing cold temperatures to make one foot of ice over a pond that you can drill holes through to catch fish 🙂 We’ll be back soon with a new project!

Things You Don’t See in Michigan Part II (version 2)

leave a comment »

I guess I’m not good at this thing because I made a post a few weeks ago and it just disappeared. I was also informed that one of the things I was trying to show is, in fact, seen in various parts of Michigan. So today I’m going to fix it.

Here’s the first one. Obviously there are fire hydrants up there, but they don’t look like this. Aren’t they all red? One of the first things I noticed when I got down here was the hydrants are painted like it’s bizarro world.

Here’s another thing you don’t see in Michigan. Look close. Can you tell what it is? It’s a road without potholes or giant cracks. I guess living somewhere where the ground doesn’t freeze has its advantages.

One of the best things about living in Michigan is that things change all the time. I get antsy and annoyed if my surroundings are the same for too long, and just when that happens the weather shifts. And just like that the world blooms and turns green, or slowly dies and still turns pretty colors. I wouldn’t trade that for blistering heat year round. Once again, your palm trees have nothing on the way a tree can go from green to yellow to red in a month.

On another note, Happy Birthday Bearclaw! Don’t worry, you’re not old yet. You are still in your twenties! See, it sounds better that way!

Things You Don’t See in Florida

with one comment

I feel like I have this assignment a little bit easier than my counterpart in Florida… but I guess we will see. Here is what I’ve come up with so far from pictures I had just layin’ around 🙂

The first is of the Mackinac Bridge from this past summer. While you do have bridges in Florida, there’s nothing quite like this one-it’s huge and scary and pretty all at the same time. Plus, there’s nothing like being in Northern Michigan on a summer day.

The next picture is a combination of two things you don’t have in Florida. The first is a giant ice tree, found in the frozen tundra that is Alpena. Your palm trees have nothing on this thing.  The second is Cory….I know you love him but you can’t have him 🙂

I’m excited to get creative with the next things I take pictures of for you! More posts to follow!

Things You Don’t See in Michigan – Part I

with one comment

How has been been almost an entire year since either of us put up pictures? We finally came to this realization so now we’re back with a brand new assignment, plenty of ideas, and a recently cleaned camera lens. I’m going to put up pictures of things in Florida that you never see in Michigan, and my counterpart in Michigan is going to do the opposite. This is just the first in what will be several posts over the next few weeks.

Well, we might as well start out easy. Here are a couple things you never see in Michigan. The first one, of course, is the space shuttle. Sure, the shuttle might be retired by now, but that doesn’t mean rockets still aren’t launched out at the coast. I can see these things from my backyard. This picture shows Atlantis launching on May 14, 2010. It was one of the last shuttle launches ever. I was standing on Cocoa Beach, about 10 miles southeast of the launch pad.

Can you find the subject of the second picture? It’s a momma gator, and I had to take an airboat out into the middle of the swamp just to find her. Gators used to be endangered, but now they are everywhere in Florida. In fact, you can expect to find a gator (if not more) in every single body of freshwater in the state.

So here ya go. A couple things you never see in Michigan. There will be more in the coming weeks. So, cousin, let’s see something you never find in Florida!

Fog

leave a comment »

I found out with my last post that it’s easy to make cool pictures with marginal talent and a long shutter setting. These pictures were taken at my house one night amidst dense fog. The fog spread out the sources of light and made for some decent pictures. I used the moon, nearby streetlights, and a flashlight to provide light. Some of the pictures use a combination.

On all of these pictures, I increased the contrast and saturation quite a bit. On a couple I reduced the brightness to make the darker spots literally disappear. One day soon I’ll get brave and try messing with some other settings. In all, I took 40 pictures. These are my favorites. I hope the neighbors don’t think I’m spying on them.

Ordinary Can Be Beautiful Too

with 3 comments

I’ve been a little discouraged lately. It seems my photography trainee is beginning to show me up! After his last post, I was amazed! He is growing up so fast 🙂

What some of our readers don’t know is that we try to give each other assignments to photograph. We talked about doing a project where you photograph in a way that makes the object hard to identify. I decided to give it a try, but I feel like for the most part you can tell what they are. They turned out more….pretty then I thought they would though, so I’m still excited about them.

Anyone who can guess what all of the objects are gets a prize! Just kidding, but I will be impressed.
